Seed Tape | CMSMatHome

CMSM at Home | Seed Tape activity

Have you ever made your own seed tape? Let’s do it together with #CMSMatHome!

Gather supplies: toilet paper (you won’t need too much!), ruler, marker or pen, 1 tablespoon of flour, some water, cotton swab, tweezers, and a packet of seeds.

Unroll the toilet paper to the length of your planned garden row. Measure the distance between seeds per information found on your seed packet and mark those spots. Mix the flour with a little bit of water to create a paste that is gooey, but not runny.

Using your cotton swab, dab the the paste onto the marks on the toilet paper. Carefully place one or two seeds on each blob of paste, making sure they stick. Tweezers might be helpful here, especially if your seeds are very small. Repeat the process until you’ve completed the length of your toilet paper, then allow it to dry.

When planting your garden, put the seed tape into the required depth of soil, then water well.

Further Your Learning

Seed tapes make great gifts. Prepare several tapes with different seeds and roll them up when they are dry. Tie with a string and put them in a plastic bag, in the refrigerator. Write on each bag the name of the seed and how deep to plant the tape.
